"Rediscovering Ancestral Roots" - The tomol named Muptami, a traditionally-built plank canoe of indigenous Chumash design, made the journey with 25 paddlers "pullers" on hand to rotate into the 6-person canoe. A continuing tradition, the Chumash community's 18-mile tomol crossing through the Santa Barbara Channel to Limuw (Santa Cruz Island) took place in California in 2012. NOAA's Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary has been working with the Chumash community for 20 years, providing funding for the construction of the tomol 'Elye'wun (pronounced El-E-ah-woon) in 1997 that still participates in the annual crossing with Muptami.
